HOW TO BALANCE A CHEMICAL EQUATION
  1. Write the unbalanced equation. Identify all reactants and products with correct formulas.
  2. Count atoms on each side. List every element and its total on the left vs right.
  3. Adjust coefficients, not subscripts. Change the number in front of each formula to balance atom counts.
  4. Balance one element at a time. Start with the most complex molecule or the element appearing in fewest compounds.
  5. Leave H and O for last. They often appear in multiple compounds and self-correct.
  6. Verify all atoms balance. Recount every element on both sides.

Remember: atoms are never created or destroyed in a chemical reaction. The same number must appear on both sides.
